TIME IS MONEY!

One of the two great equalizers in selling is time. Great sellers and poor sellers all deal with the same clock. No one has more or less time. They just do different things with their time! The more time you have for selling – the more you’ll sell, and the more money you’ll make.  Here are a few tips to help you manage your time better.

Adopt a “worst-first” policy.  Do the things you dislike most ‘first’, just to get rid of them.  Tackle these issues early in the day so your mind can focus on the other events that are bound to happen.  This even applies to those issues that may not be your highest priority.  The idea is to feel good by getting rid of the “make you feel bad” issues.  This will energize you so you can handle other tasks.  You’ll find yourself much more positive to handle those callers and customers by not having those problems floating around the back of your mind.

Read incoming print (especially electronic mail) only when you’re ready to deal with it.  An email is not a call.  It is unreasonable to expect that someone is sitting at their desk staring at the screen waiting for an incoming message.  Imagine how silly an office full of agents would look staring at their telephone, waiting for it to ring.  Block out certain times of the day for your mail.  The best time depends on you and your system.  Letting faxes, emails and other print govern your day and manage your time is a huge time waster.  Decide who is controlling what and don’t be afraid to let others know that you control the medium – it’s not the medium that controls you.

Batch ‘like’ tasks into the same time period when you can.  Return calls, send brochures, send off files, in sequence if possible.  You’ll find that you will develop a rhythm and a system that helps you with the efficiency of the process, thereby improving accuracy and saving time.

This weeks ACTION item – Keep track of what you do with your time for a few days. You’ll be very surprised at how much is wasted. Do more in your regular work day and enjoy your non-work hours even more.
